Teacher nurtures students, garden

When Thalberg Elementary school teacher Linda Bass-Reilly was presented with Southington’s Teacher of the Year award she was all at once humbled, honored and a little overwhelmed.
“I was shaking and everything went in slow motion for a moment,” she said.
A teacher for 30 years, Linda Bass-Reilly knows deep down what she loves most about her job.
“It sounds simple, but I just love the children,” she said. “I love watching my students grow emotionally and mentally each year.”
She says all children are gifted in different ways and embraces this. Two of her students wrote and produced a play this past school year and assigned parts for every class member.
Thalberg intern Tony Arru, who will be working as Linda’s intern next spring, considers her a teaching master.
“She never raises her voice, is always calm and holds an all-inclusive atmosphere in her classroom,” Arru said.
Bass-Reilly is very involved with the  Southington Community Center, the Miss Southington Ambassador Program, the Orchard Valley Garden Club and the Northeast Organic Farming Association. Her love of gardening led her to envision an outdoor classroom where Thalberg’s students can learn to respect and appreciate nature, and learn about recycling, composting and gardening 101.
Students love the wheelchair accessible garden, from the students at Oak Hill, a school located inside Thalberg for students with mental and physical challenges, to monthly visitors from Orchard Valley Garden Club who bring a lesson and supplies for students.
Taking care of the garden is a school wide activity. Thalberg kindergarteners learn about butterflies in the garden, first, second and third graders planted a vegetable garden and fourth and fifth graders are invited to care for the garden as an alternate recess activity.
Students receive hands on learning, studying about seeds then planting them to watch and record their growth year round.
Combining old school teaching style with modern day technology, Bass-Reilly secured a grant for three iPads which are used to research when to plant certain flowers and download bird call apps to easily identify the garden’s birds.
Bass-Reilly’s students compiled their annual research and produce a 30 page e-book, “Our School Garden,” which is available online.
“Linda loves to interact with her students on all levels,” said Dawn Brown, a paraprofessional at Thalberg. “She nurtures the students as much as she nurtures her garden.”

Time capsule tradition continues at South End

There was just one question on the minds of a group of Southington High School seniors as they opened a time capsule held in storage at South End Elementary School since 2006: Do you think the Twinkies are still edible?
It is a South End School tradition to “bury” a time capsule for each graduating fifth grade class. The students put items in a multi-gallon white pail during the class’s annual recognition ceremony. The capsule is then opened just before students from that class graduate from Southington High School, with the current fifth grade students at South End looking on.
“Every year they come back,” said South End fifth grade teacher Rita Stearns. “They’re so excited.”
Some of the items that were left in the 2006 capsule included the Twinkies (which were rock hard), a Red Sox hat, pictures and students letters to themselves.
“I’ve been waiting for this since the sixth grade,” Shannon Perry told the South End students as she flipped through the items she had left in the capsule. The items included Flat Stanley paraphernalia and a few “horrid” fifth grade photos.
Many of the students had left themselves questions, such as are you still friends with that person or dating this other person? The former South End students laughed and smiled as they read through the questions they left themselves.
The former South End students also reminisced about their days at the school with teachers and held a question and answer session with the current students.

Lincoln College hires Stokes; Bristol Eastern assistant named as women’s hoops coach

by Michael Letendre
Staff Writer
Bristol Eastern girls basketball assistant coach Mike Stokes has been a big part of the Lancers’ program since the late 1990s.
Stokes have been head coach Tony Floyd’s right hand man for years now but the career assistant was looking for a bigger challenge and a team of his own.
He’s been getting that head coaching itch over the last few years but the right job just hasn’t popped up.
That was until Lincoln College of New England – formerly Briarwood College of Southington – went looking for a head coach for its women’s program.
Stokes applied, earned the job and come the 2013-14 campaign, he’ll be at the helm of the Wildcats’ ever growing program.
“Stokes is just the right individual to bring our women’s program to the national level,” said Director of Athletics Preston Beverly. “He is well known throughout the Connecticut community which will aide in retaining Connecticut residents who want to stay in state to play sports, but also has strong national ties that will attract others to his program.”
Lincoln, located just down the street from Lake Compounce Amusement Park, is a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association.
It’s the national governing body for two-year college athletics which covers junior colleges and community colleges nationwide.
Former NJCAA players include Miami Heat’s Chris “Birdman” Anderson and teammate Joel Anthony so there’s a wealth of talent that comes through those institutions and Stokes hopes to add to those totals.
But getting that job at Lincoln was a big deal for Stokes as he was looking for a coaching upgrade.
“I was looking for two things,” said Stokes. “Either get a varsity job elsewhere or you know, just build my own thing. The Lincoln job was an opportunity where I took an aggressive approach and even though I didn’t have any varsity experience, I think that my credentials and my experience that I had helped me get an opportunity.”
When it comes to Lincoln, Stokes wants to build more of a local program and that means getting kids from Bristol, Plainville, Southington and other surrounding towns into the two-year program and keeping them in state.
With Beverly at the helm of Lincoln, keeping that local feel is very important. Beverly, who was originally hired as the resident life coordinator, is the new athletic director and will also assume the role of men’s head basketball coach.
So while Stokes will be building his program, so will Beverly.
“They have some very good ideas not only building a program but to sustain it long term,” said Stokes of Lincoln. “In conversations with Athletic Director Preston Beverly, he has a great vision on where he would like to take the program. The men have has some success and he’s done a great job in trying to build that part of the program.”
“He’s looking for me to use my relationships I’ve built over the years to keep our kids in state that want to play junior college basketball.”
Stokes doesn’t want those potential, local players going elsewhere and that’s where his understanding and knowledge of the land in Bristol and the rest of the CCC will certainly come into play.
It’s never easy building a program from the ground up but it’s something Stokes is looking forward to.
And who knows what this job will lead to once Stokes gets the Wildcats up and running.
“I’m definitely looking forward to the challenge,” said Stokes. “My time that I spent at Eastern, one thing I learned from Tony and other coaches that left this program is that they build strong programs. You can look at what’s going on at Eastern, the job (Gary) Fleming did at Bristol Central, obviously the job (Joe) Mone is doing over at St. Paul and I’m looking to follow the same footprint.”
“I’m trying to put a stamp on the program and build it,” he said. “It’s a little more intense at the college level but I have a good foundation which I learned from.”

Middle schools ready for students during construction

The first phase of the middle school renovations has been completed, and now both DePaolo and Kennedy Middle Schools are ready to start on time.
Past environmental tests found traces of asbestos and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) at both DePaolo and Kennedy Middle Schools. The remediation process was able to be completed this summer after voters approved middle school renovations for a second time earlier this year. Voters approved the renovations in 2011, but renovations were sent back to referendum after school officials discovered that the removal of PCB would increase cost estimates significantly.
Southington Schools Superintendent Dr. Joe Erardi said he has “absolutely no concern” for starting the new school year safely and on time. Now the second phase of renovations, construction, will begin soon.
“[The schools] will look like a construction site, but it will be safe,” Erardi said.
Erardi has ensured parents that precautions have been made for students’ safety despite certain difficulties.
“There’s been… significant background checks [of workers on the site],” Erardi said. “[And] if there is a need for additional safety officials outside for traffic patterns, we’re prepared to do all of that.”
When students return to school August 29, the gymnasium will be off limits for P.E. classes and girls’ volleyball until November 1, reported Chris Palmieri, the assistant principal of DePaolo Middle School. Gym classes and other athletic activities will take place outdoors if the weather cooperates. Girls’ volleyball from DePaolo will take place at the high school, while girls’ volleyball from Kennedy will take place at Derynoski Elementary School.
School renovations are expected to be completed by fall 2015. By then, Palmieri said the schools will have a new media center, 10 new classrooms and a new main office as well as a separate room for band and chorus practice in the back of the auditorium. The old media center will turn into two new art classrooms, and there will also be an upgrade in technology.
“[The renovations] will give us an opportunity to have Wi-Fi throughout every classroom…state-of-the-art technology [and] climate control with [both] the buildings having AC,” Erardi said. “There will be two schools we will be very proud of.”
Erardi said an informational meeting will take place for parents before school starts to provide a review of what to expect when construction starts and how the students will stay safe. The meeting at DePaolo Middle School will take place Tuesday, August 27 at 7 p.m. and the meeting at Kennedy Middle School will take place at 7:30 p.m. the same evening. On August 28, students will have the opportunity to tour the middle schools from 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.
“The voice of a parent is a very important voice to me,” he said.

By Tammi Naudus Though the town’s two middle schools, including Kennedy, pictured here, are still active construction zones, officials say it is safe for students to return later this month.

Faculty and staff members of the Southington school district kicked off the beginning of the 2013-2014 school year with a theme of “many firsts” and “change” on Monday.
Assistant Superintendent Karen Smith, along with board members and other educators, recognized this theme throughout the celebration by welcoming more than 50 new staff members and recognizing the first full-day kindergarten program along with the implementation of the new Smarter Balanced Assessment tests that are aligned with the new Common Core State Standards.
“It is the year of many firsts,” Smith said. “For some this is the first year teaching… [and] it is the first year for many new initiatives.”
Board of Education Chairman Brian Goralski expressed his appreciation for the role that educators play in these new initiatives.
“Year after year, change is a real part of education,” Goralski said.  “Change is what prepares our kids for the future.”
This year’s event also featured a video that highlighted a new initiative: Virtual STEM University, a web-based educational resource that focuses on science, technology, engineering and math. Southington Education Foundation (SEF) Chair Dawn Miceli, along with faculty members and students, played different roles in the video, explaining how the online educational tool will allow teachers to share and access lesson design plans.  Calling the project an evolution, the video emphasized how the Southington will serve as a model for other school districts.
“The STEM University will separate our district, our staff, our leadership team and most of all, the impact of our students from any other district,” Southington School Supt. Dr. Erardi said in the video.
Besides celebrating upcoming changes within the school district, faculty members and staff also honored ten educators who have worked in Southington for 30 years. They also recognized the new teacher of the year, Linda Bass-Reilly from Thalberg Elementary School.
“Collectively, we are on a mission to create a safe, healthy, nurturing, clean, challenging and well-funded educational environment,” Bass-Reilly said. “Our primary goal is to develop self- confident, highly educated citizens, and we can only achieve this goal by working together.”
Erardi also addressed the importance of this partnership.
“What really is important is that we work in partnership to develop intelligent and caring individuals,” he said. “Our challenge this year is to lead with the art of teaching—that’s the reason why we are here.”

Plainville principal shadows Southington superintendent

When Steven LePage became the principal of Plainville High School, he did not believe in the idea of rising through the ranks to the position of superintendent, until now.
“I always thought that being a high school principal would be the end of the road for me, where I would want to stop my journey,” LePage said.
But learning from Plainville Superintendent Jeffrey Kitching and other superintendents in the past, inspired LePage to consider the possibility of a new journey in the school system.
“Seeing Kitching move positive change forward while still maintaining strong relationships with community members and with kids was an inspiration to me,” LePage said.
Principal LePage just began the UConn Executive Leadership Program, a 13-month program that requires participants to complete five three-credit courses that include an internship.
LePage is an intern for Dr. Erardi, the superintendent of Southington public schools. Between shadowing Dr. Erardi during administrative meetings and observing the superintendent’s interactions with the community, LePage said he admires his mentor’s ability to lead the school system.
“He is an extremely strong communicator [and] has an obvious commitment and passion for what he does,” LePage said. “He is someone who also distributes credit and celebrates the people who get the job done.”
Dr. Erardi said he feels privileged to be a mentor for Principal LePage.
“I wanted our district to be a professional learning community for adults too,” Dr. Erardi said. “It is a two-way street with Principal LePage—I’m learning from him.”
Superintendent Kitching said he remembers his own internship experience, which helped him develop a professional friendship with his mentor that continues to this day.
“The experience you get as an aspiring superintendent during your internship is critical,” Kitching said. “Being paired with an experienced superintendent from another school district allows interns to see the position…from a different perspective.”
LePage said he has seen the position from a global perspective through his internship experience.  Out of all the lessons that Dr. Erardi has taught his intern so far, LePage hopes enhance his ability to “see the bigger picture” during administrative meetings after he completes the internship.
“Dr. Erardi has clear-cut objectives for his meetings and a strong coherence between the dsitrict’s goals, his goals and everything that happens in those meetings,” LePage said.
When LePage does not spend his time in Southington, he stays up until midnight reading books required for the program and writing internship blog entries. When not working on the program, LePage finishes work for the high school.  On top of that, he finds time to tuck his children into bed and to work out at the gym.
“It’s a juggling act,” LePage said. “Every minute of my day is scheduled tightly.”
Despite LePage’s busy schedule, his passion for leading the school system never stops.  Besides serving as a high school principal, LePage also serves as an advisor for three different clubs, including the ski club.
“I care about the kids,” he said. “I treat them like they are my own.”
Although LePage will receive his certification within a year, he wants to focus on his love for being the principal of the high school.  LePage said he hopes to become a superintendent one day, but has not decided when to pursue the position.
“My goal for right now is to learn as a professional, to learn as a leader and to develop skills that I can apply in my current role as principal,” he said. “Then in the future if the opportunity presents itself, then I’ll have the certification and skills required to consider another possibility.”

Giving Back Girls help hand out backpacks

The Giving Back Girls kicked off another backpack drive as part of the Southington Smart Start Program, providing at least 400 backpacks to students in need throughout the community.
Created in 2010 by high school freshman Erin Gibney, the Giving Back Girls spent hours filling each backpack with school supplies, gift cards to Walmart and gift certificates for a hair cut. With the help of the Southington Fire Department, The Giving Back Girls loaded each backpack onto the fire truck before bringing them to Derynoski Elementary School. Between Jansport backpacks and Barbie backpacks, the girls offered a variety of them to students of all grades. They also displayed a table full of children’s books and other school supplies, like rulers and lunchboxes. As parents entered with their children, they had a number of options to choose from, since each backpack had its own style.
“We like to give them a fun experience,” Erin said.
About 50 families in need walk turn to Southington Community Services on a daily basis to receive bags of food and other donations, according to Assistant Mark Fasarrelli. Erin said helping these families brings her a sense of joy and accomplishment.
“Helping gives me a sense of fulfillment,” she said. “It’s nice to help people in your own town.”
Erin’s friend, Marissa Matarazzo, has been an active member of The Giving Back Girls since the community involvement group began. The drive has also brought her a sense of fulfillment.
“I want to make kids smile, to get them excited about going back to school,” Marissa said.
Tricia Gibney, Erin’s mother, helped coordinate and distribute the backpacks. Tricia said she is proud of the hard work that all 22 girls accomplished in order to make a difference in the community.
“It was just an amazing process to see all these girls organize the backpacks,” she said.
Both Tricia and Erin hope to inspire younger children to get involved with The Giving Back Girls. They plan to recruit more girls to carry on the group’s mission, especially after its current members move on to high school and college.
“When you start at a young age, you are helping people your whole life,” Erin said.

The Board of Education announced the launch of its “Virtual STEM University,” a web-based educational resource for teachers that will provide easy access to lesson design plans in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
STEM University is a partnership between The Southington Education Foundation (SEF) and the Board of Education. The uploaded lesson design plans for the classroom will cultivate greater aptitude in STEM education for students in grades K through 1, according to a press release from the Southington Education Foundation.
“This university will have lessons designed by which all teachers within our district can access, share and create for the benefit of our students,” said Board of Education Committee Member Terry Lombardi.
STEM University will also prepare students move towards becoming digital and global citizens as technology becomes a more thorough understanding of complex concepts in the 21st century.  Calling the instructional website “exciting,” Southington Schools Supt. Dr. Joseph Erardi said STEM University is a “cutting-edge,” opportunity for students and teachers.
“We are changing how students learn best,” he said. “It is important for teachers to understand those changes.”
STEM University will allow teachers to work together collaboratively not only within one particular school, but also within the entire school district.  Southington Education Foundation Chair Dawn Miceli hopes STEM University will give the school district an opportunity to become a model for other school districts in Connecticut.
“We will be at the forefront,” Miceli said. “Southington will be a leader for STEM in Connecticut.”
The project is part of a five-prong commitment to advancing STEM education in the school district.  The school district plans to launch Virtual STEM University October 1.

School officials pleased with test scores

School officials said they are pleased with the scores on the Connecticut Mastery Tests (CMTs) and the Connecticut Academic Performance Test (CAPT) for the 2012-2013 school year, and are ready to prepare for changes the exams will bring during the current school year. Students in grades three to eight take the CMTs, which evaluate their skills in mathematics, reading and writing, every year. Fifth and eight grade students also take science, an additional section of the test.
Students in the district scored above the state average across all subjects in regards to the percentage of students meeting the goal on the tests. The “goal” is equivalent to what school officials want students to attain every year, which is also the percentage that federal programs like No Child Left Behind evaluate to ensure that students do not fall behind academically.
When school officials evaluate the test scores, they view them laterally in order to understand the strengths and weaknesses of grade levels instead of comparing the score to the year before.
For instance, fourth graders scored 6.9 percent higher on the reading portion than they did last year as third graders. Fifth graders, sixth graders and seventh graders also showed improvements in the reading section. The fifth grade class scored 3.6 percent higher while the sixth grade class scored 6.1 percent higher. The seventh grade class scored 3.5 percent higher and the eighth grade class remained exactly the same at 88 percent.
The third grade class met goal across all sections of the test.  They scored 83 percent in mathematics, 71 percent in reading and 73.2 percent in writing.
“Southington really held itself, and in some cases we even scored higher than in the past,” Assistant Supt. of Schools Karen Smith said during a recent Board of Education meeting. “We are seeing some continued growth in the areas we have been focusing for the last few years.”
Students in tenth grade take the CAPT, which evaluates their skills in reading, writing, science and mathematics. They take this test once throughout their high school career, so school officials cannot track the students’ progress over the years. Scores for the sophomores increased this year in math, science and writing.  There was a 3.2 percent increase in the math, a 5.5 percent increase in science and a 5.7 percent increase in writing.  The percentage of students meeting goal on the reading portion decreased by 1.8 percent.
“I am proud to share that our scores remained solid, and I am particularly proud of the high school,” said Southington School Supt. Dr. Joseph Erardi. “Our math scores remained solid, and our reading scores across the district [went through] static or incremental growth.”
Dr. Erardi said educators across the district started to prepare students for the new Common Core State Standards, which the state adopted in 2010. The Common Core State Standards have higher expectations for what students in every grade must learn, consisting of fewer lesson plans that dig deeper into each subject. The CMT and CAPT are not designed in alignment with the Common Core State Standards.
By the 2014-2015 school year, Connecticut will administer the Smarter Balanced Assessments at all schools, and will only implement the science portion of the CMT and CAPT.  Dr. Erardi said Governor Dannel Malloy has asked for a waiver from CMT and CAPT, which allows districts to “opt out” of traditional testing during the current school year.  The Southington school district has decided to start the Smarter Balanced Assessments this year, instead of taking traditional tests.  Students will take the new test online rather than use paper and pencils to complete it.
“We will move to Smarter Balanced testing for this school year, allowing us to be fully prepared for the following school year,” Erardi said.

SOUTHINGTON—Director of Athletics Preston Beverly has been busy since his hiring last spring as Lincoln College of New England continues to build its athletic department. In recent years, the NJCAA Division III school has shown promise with their men’s basketball team, and the women’s basketball team has had varied levels of success.
Former Bristol Eastern assistant coach Mike Stokes has already been hired as the new Wildcat women’s basketball coach for this winter. Now, Preston has hired two more individuals as he builds the Wildcat program.  Deena Martinelli was been hired as the new cheerleading coach, and Gina Prentiss was named as the sports information director.
“These are just some of many revitalizing changings the college plans on making,” says Beverly.
Martinelli has been involved in the sport of Cheerleading for over a decade. Some of her accomplishments include a Naugatuck Valley League championship, two state championships, two New England regional championships, a national title in Tampa FL, and numerous invitational competitions.
At the collegiate level, Martinelli, a member of Eastern Connecticut State University, traveled to Daytona Beach, FL for the national competition.
She has also also served as a volunteer coach at Southington High School for the past two years.
Martinelli currently resides in Southington.
She will be joined in the Wildcat office by Gina Prentiss, who enters her first year as sports information director with the school.
Prentiss is also a member of the college’s admissions team beginning in January 2013. Besides her roll as a LCNE admissions representative, Prentiss has spent several years working in the field of education.
“Gina will make a great addition to the department and will be a continued positive addition to the college and community,” said Beverly. “She is up to date with all forms of media exposure both viral and traditional which is a key component for this position. Her proven hard work and dedication to the college being an alum will undoubtedly show in her work.”
A native of Bristol, Prentiss serves as the primary media contact for the men’s and womenss basketball teams. Additionally, she is responsible for producing official publications, media guides, game notes, press releases, and game programs. She also writes collegiate sports analysis articles for the print and on-line news media.
An alumnus of Lincoln College of New England, Prentiss first became interested in sports just as many Americans, by being a fan and a spectator at a young age.
Although never taking to the field itself, her love of sport was fostered and stoked by friends and family. Her husband has been a basketball coach for middle school students for several years, and her father takes to the golf course any chance he gets.
Prentiss resides in Bristol along with her husband, Michael.
