High school students of the Southington Alternative Program (ALTA) recently kicked off their third annual art exhibit at Southington Public Library, featuring over 40 pieces of art.
When Andy D’Agostino was creating his painting, he wanted to use a variety of colors to attract people’s attention.
His abstract painting, which features a purple background, displays geometric shapes broken up in interesting positions.
“It’s pretty abstract,” said D’Agostino, pointing to his work of art on the second floor of the library. “I just wanted all different colors. Colors you don’t normally see.”
Throughout the entire month, the library will display the work of D’Agostino and other Alta students in the Gallery.
As March Artists of the Month, the students have featured a variety of artwork in this year’s exhibit between paintings and landscape drawings, most with abstract styles.
The project is co-sponsored by a grant from The Southington Arts and Crafts Association.
Luciana Florio, an art teacher at ALTA, said her students enjoyed painting the most in her class.
A course that takes place once a week for 40 minutes, Florio said through the art program, students learn about different elements of art from color to shape to space. Last year, students created masked with different designs.
“It’s the one time a week we can just let our emotions go in the artwork,” said D’Agostino.
Florio said she feels proud of her students’ artwork, and hopes the community will see what the students have accomplished in her class.
“The students are very talented and they’re able to express that through the art program,” said Florio, who allowed students to create the artwork of their choice using the different elements they learned in the class. “I’m very proud of them.”
